The Hans and Mary Romney Memorial Prize, 2009

A pupil of Tunbridge Wells Girls’ Grammar School has won the 2009 Hans and Mary Romney Memorial Prize.  The winner, Charlotte Andrew, collected a cheque for £150. An additional prize of £100 goes to the Music Department of the School.

Charlotte was presented with her Prize by baritone Brian Rayner Cook during the interval of the Hans Romney Concert at Trinity Theatre. In addition to her Prize, Charlotte was given the opportunity to interview the Endellion String Quartet, one of the world’s leading quartets.  “It’s wonderful to have won this Prize” said Charlotte, “and amazing to have had the chance to interview such a distinguished quartet as well. I felt very nervous, but they were so relaxed and friendly. It was a great privilege.”

Sue Waddington, Director of Music at Tunbridge Wells Girls’ Grammar School, was also delighted. “The School has just been awarded the status of Specialist School in Music with English, and Charlotte has worked so hard. Her relaxed style when she was interviewing Endellion showed she has talents beyond her music”.

Percussion Workshop with O Duo, February 2009

Y11 GCSE music students from Mascalls School, Paddock Wood, were amongst the 60 participants in the Community Percussion Workshop held at Trinity Theatre before O Duo's concert. Becky Sumpter, Head of Music at Mascalls School, said, "Owen and Ollie's musicality and approachability was wonderful and very inspiring for the young musicians and composers among the audience.  O Duo demonstrated how enjoyable classical and world music can be and broke down some of the barriers young people feel towards classical music by making it fun and understandable."

The Hans and Mary Romney Memorial Prize, 2008

Peter Aisher, an 18-year-old student at Tonbridge School was presented with the Hans and Mary Romney Memorial Prize at the Green Room Music concert on Sunday 16th March, 2008  at Trinity Theatre.

Peter won with an outstanding AS-level examination result. Peter, a pianist, is delighted with his success. “I’m extremely pleased to be receiving this Prize. I found the AS course stimulating and thoroughly enjoyable, and it has really been an ‘ear-opener’. I could happily play the piano for hours, and often do, and having done AS music, the same is now true of composing and just listening”, said Peter.

John Holmes, Head of Woodwind and Academic Music at Tonbridge, added “Peter is an outstandingly talented individual. Musically he is able easily to apply his quick mind to analytical and perceptual matters. He is also an accomplished jazz pianist, a promising arranger and a valued singer in both classical and jazz contexts. He hopes to read Natural Sciences at Cambridge after leaving Tonbridge”.

“This is the second year we have awarded the Prize,” said Dennis Smith, Chairman of Green Room Music, “and yet again I am delighted at the standard reached by the competitors, and the support given by the schools”.
