Dante Quartet with Collegium Regale (Choral Scholars of King's College, Cambridge)

Winner of the prestigious Royal Philharmonic Society Award for Chamber Music in 2007 and the Chamber Music section of the BBC Magazine Awards in April 2009, the Dante Quartet is known for its imaginative programming and the emotional intensity of its performances.  The group was founded in 1995 at the International Musicians Seminar at Prussia Cove, Cornwall, and chose the name of Dante to reflect the idea of a great and challenging journey.

The Dante Quartet enjoys a special association with King's College Cambridge.  As part of King's College Choir, Collegium Regale (conductor and trainer Stephen Cleobury) the choral scholars sing in the chapel's daily worship services, which remain the choir's raison d'etre, as well as maintaining a busy concert, recording and touring schedule.  As Collegium Regale (Latin for King's College), the choral scholars perform independently of the choir.

"Still unmatched for their musicality and sheer ability to entertain" (The London Times) 2009 Grammy Award-winners, The King's Singers have put forth the highest calibre of a capella performance since the group's inception at King's College, Cambridge in 1968.

Now comprising David Hurley (countertenor), Robin Tyson (countertenor), Paul Phoenix (tenor), Philip Lawson (baritone), Christopher Gabbitas (baritone) and Stephen Connolly (bass), The King's Singers continue to be one of the most sort-after and critically-acclaimed vocal ensembles in the world - widely celebrated for their manifold repertoire choices and commitment to new works.

For this concert at the Spa Hotel, in the spa town of Royal Tunbridge Wells, the programme's common theme is water - whether it be as a mode of transport, a barrier between love, or even a drink.

The Romney Concert

Amsterdam Loeki Stardust Quartet

Since its formation the Amsterdam Loeki Stardust Quartet has explored the boundaries of the recorder consort.  Its musical adventure started in 1978.  The ensemble's reputation grew quickly when they emerged as the winner of the 1981 Musica Antigua Competition in Bruges.  What followed was the recognition as a serious ensemble of unparalleled virtuosity - a recording contract with Decca and the start of an international career.  The quartet's recordings (for L'Oiseau-Lyre, Decca and Channel Classics) have confirmed its reputation as the world's most innovative and exciting recorder consort.

La Spagna

Renaissance at the Spanish Royal Court

In the 15th and 16th Century, Spain was one of the world's leading naval and commercial powers. Spanish music of the day reflects both the era's pomp and glory and an indescribable, irrepressible energy. Music played a highly important role both at the Royal Court and in nobility's churches and private chapels. Composers such as Pedro Escobar,

Johannes Cornago, Diego Ortiz, Antonio de Cabezón and Nicolas Gombert enchanted the period's audiences, their creative bandwidth ranging from narrative Cancións to ingenious motets and Recercades and fiery Batallas.

"La Spagna" takes the audience on a sonic journey back into this magnificent era.
